Bio
Singer-songwriter, Sebastian Kole, was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. A trained jazz musician and vocal performer, Sebastian Kole began playing piano in the church and performing as a young child .At a very early age, he established his desire and destiny to sing and perform his own music: "I knew a long time ago I didn't want to do cover music; singing and songwriting for me are pretty inseparable." In fact, among his greatest influences in music are singer-songwriter musicians, particularly piano players such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Prince, John Legend, and Bilal. Also among his influences have been Beethoven, Bach, Handel, and Thelonius Monk, master musicians whom Sebastian Kole says were "never afraid of their own minds."
Upon graduating with a degree in music, he recorded and released his self-titled album. Over the next few years, he toured Germany, France and Italy. He has performed his own music opening in concert for Monica, Raheem Devaughn, Anthony David, Julie Dexter and Musiq Soulchild and has shared the stage with fellow Birmingham grown artist Ruben Studdard. Sebastian Kole is set to release his next album "Live From My Notebook" in 2010, which features hit singles "Jaded" and "Before You Go."
Sebastian Kole is an engaging storyteller with an uncanny ability to relate to people in his lyrics, music, and performance. He often sings of relationships which are a common human experience. Whether excess, or lack thereof, I try to look at them from a different perspective." He also offers a unique perspective on music.
Often labeled as neo-soul, Sebastian Kole's musical writing style is fundamentally a fusion of R&B, rock, and hip hop, topped with a touch of classical. On stage this blend frequently flirts with funk, regularly grooves with gospel, and makes an occasional rendezvous with reggae. One vocal trademark is the continual cascading of jazz overlays. His music is that which fits the truth of the present moment, be it laden with club or a hint of church. Sebastian Kole's sound is indubitably unique, a phenomenon, admittedly a choice of evolution, both evolving in music and evolving the music itself. "Ultimately", Sebastian Kole reveals, "music is liquid, but genres help to spoon feed. Music is a language perhaps with subsets of dialects- or genres-the way people hear, understand and relate to it. But in reality most people do not listen to only one type or just one genre of music. Really I choose what we all choose which is to blend it all together making a synthesis of sound."
Sebastian Kole's lyrics, ones of consciousness, are accessible. And just like his performances, they are honest and believable. Sebastian Kole's ability to make fans, as he makes music, is not only a mark of his undeniable talent, but also his believability. He reaches his audience with life-relating lyrics, and captured them as fans as he thrills them with his live performances. Every concert he delivers is full of energy and excitement, each note delivered with heart. His conviction is inextricably linked to the fact that his music is an extension of, a bullhorn for his voice. His connection with fans goes beyond pre-planned and pre-prepared presentations. Rather every performance is unique. He goes above and beyond for his fans, including, performing a neo-soul freestyle selection, during which he takes audience suggestions and on the spot writes the audience a song.
Just as his performance cannot be duplicated, Sebastian Kole's vocal style cannot be contained. With his multi-octave range, he consistently croons ballads through his baritone middle range, breaking it up to occasionally and unexpectedly riff, from upper tenor, to the bottom of his range at bass. And just when you think the song is done, the band reprises giving way to an impassioned, Sebastian belting, ardent, alto-range vamp. His strength as a vocalist is undeniable! His viability as a songwriter is incomparable! His performance is second to none! Sebastian Kole is a musical force on the move and making moves!!!
